The other day I was talking with a couple of friends about this passage:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction…
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
My friends had shared some awesome insights into the passage when the Lord highlighted something very important He wanted me to hear. The passage states that God is the “God of all comfort”. The Lord emphasized the truth that all legitimate comfort comes from Him.
I have sought comfort from persons, places and things. But persons, places and things cannot be the source of comfort. When anyone or anything other than God is my source of comfort it will form dependencies, addictions and disappointments, rather than freedom and fulfillment. Persons, places and things can be conduits of the Lord’s comfort, but the Lord is the only true source of comfort.
It is important for me to only direct my heart toward the Lord for comfort. When my heart is fixed on Him for my comfort, then it is up to Him how he will comfort me. And He promises me that He will comfort me. “…God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.” 1 Peter 5:10
From where have you been drawing your comfort? Is that the Lord comforting you through that person, place or thing? Or, are you substituting the convenient or easy comfort for what the Lord has for you?

this is sooooo true – soooo simple and plain, but I have never read this scripture in this way. i’m challenged since i’m in a place in life in which I have been severely tempted to just “get comfortable” as the world views comfort. the irony is that the only safe place … the only place of rest, is in the center of God’s will. we only find His rest when we take His yoke upon us
Daniel,That is a cool correlation between comfort and the Lord’s yoke. I had not made that connection. Thanks for being a brother! Luv, Rick
