When we encounter difficult times our core values and beliefs come to the surface in our thoughts, words, or actions. When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane He faced the greatest crisis of any person who has ever walked the earth. He was about to take into His being the physical pain, the mental anguish, the abuse, the sickness, the sin, and the punishment for every person who has ever lived (Isaiah 53:4-6). The pressure of this sacrifice brought a tremendous weight to His soul. It was at this time Jesus’ core values came to the surface. One of His core values was that with His Heavenly Father, “All things are possible.”
The writer of the book of Hebrews tells us that Jesus’ prayers were heard because of His piety. “In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety (reverence)” (Hebrews 5:7).
One of my convictions is that a facet of Jesus’ piety or reverence was His belief that with His father all things are possible. This truth is verified in Hebrews 11:6 which tells us that, “…he who comes to God must believe that He is…” The piety of Jesus was rooted in the value and belief that with His Father, all things are possible.
Yet, many times when I have prayed, I begin asking God at the point of my unbelief.
My desire is that when I face a crisis in my soul I should begin with the foundation that with my God all things are possible. Jesus has promised us when we face the mountains of life with core value of faith in the possibilities of God, the mountains can move. “And Jesus answered saying to them, ‘Have faith in God. ‘Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him…’” (Mark 11:22-23).
I invite you to join me, not only in this coming year but throughout our walk with Him, in allowing one of our core values and beliefs to be that with our God all things are possible.
“And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by. And He was saying, “Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will” (Mark 14:35-36).
Response:
–Which of your core values have you seen bubble to the surface in the midst of crisis? Not those values you hope for, but the ones that actually showed up. If they aren’t the core values by which you want to live, or that God is calling you to, ask the Lord to move in your heart.
–Make a list of the times, events and places that God has shown Himself to be a God of possibilities in your life. Spend some time in prayer thanking Him for showing up and ask Him to firmly anchor in your heart that He will be there the next time too. Make a commitment to begin your time of prayer with the assumption that He is the God of possibilities!
